About

This psychological chamber piece explores the secret world of childhood through the prism of a dyed-in-the-wool British dowager Mrs St Maugham and her precocious and equally eccentric granddaughter Laurel. When enigmatic Miss Madrigal is hired as a household companion and manager, the two finally meet their match. Enid Bagnold wrote this play when living in Rottingdean. First performed in the USA in 1955, the play came to the UK in 1956. John Gielgud directed the first London production. This will be a debut of The Chalk Garden on our stage. This production will be entered into Brighton and Hove Arts Council’s Drama Awards 2024.
This will be a open adjudication on Friday 11 October at the conclusion of the play, which you are invited to stay and hear.
Please note, this play contains adult themes and language.

This amateur production of “The Chalk Garden” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd
on behalf of Samuel French Ltd www.concordtheatricals.co.uk
