Sea Swimming has been a popular pursuit in Brighton for years, in fact the city is home to England’s oldest swimming club.
Brighton is famous for being a city-by-the-sea and so it is no surprise that sea swimming has played a pivotal part in the destination’s popularity as a holiday hotspot. In the 18th Century Dr Richard Russell helped to put Brighton on the map when he proclaimed the health benefits of sea water were superior to those provided by inland spas. His message lives on, as today millions of visitors come to Brighton every year, many of whom take to the waters.
If you are tempted to swim in the sea, then please plan ahead by checking the Tide Timetables and take note of the sea safety tips as well. However, if you’re not ready to dive-in to sea swimming then you will find plenty of swimming pools & leisure centres across Brighton & Hove or for the open-air experience visit the Saltdean Lido.
In Spring 2023 the National Open Water Swimming Centre for Excellence by Sea Lanes Brighton will open on Madeira Drive. The centre will include a permanent 50m open air heated swimming pool and an endless pool training facility. On the site at the moment is the Sea Lanes Pop-Up offering a selection of leisure activities and food & drink by the beach which will remain in place until construction begins.
