About
A new play about the extraordinary life and work of trailblazing ceramic artist Clarice Cliff. Clarices striking, colourful and innovative designs have made her a household name, and some of her most famous pieces have sold for thousands of pounds. Her vibrant and joyful patterns represented the new modern spirit of the 1930s for women, bringing sunshine on a plate into many homes. The play charts her rise from humble working class beginnings to the first female art director of a famous commercial firm and it includes images of her iconic work. In her working life nothing intimidated her and she was not afraid to break the rules and stand out. In public Clarice was described as one of the romances of the pottery trade, but her private life concealed a heart wrenching secret which could have ruined her.
The play is written and performed by Phoenix Arts Associate Artist Elizabeth Blake, directed by Brenda Longman and features the voice of special guest Nicholas Lumley (Paddington 2, Downton Abbey, The Crown.)
The show recently sold out at The Phoenix Theatre & Arts Centre, Petersfield Museum & Art Gallery and The Everyman Cheltenham (Irving Studio).
