Eddie Carbone, a Brooklyn longshoreman, has brought up his niece, Catherine, as his own daughter.

When she succumbs to the attractions of the charismatic Rodolpho, Eddies explosive jealousy has terrifying and tragic consequences for New Yorks close-knit Italian-American neighborhood.
