About
Sussex Dolphin Project is committed to protecting local dolphin species through research, awareness and education.
The project was launched in 2018, as part of the World Cetacean Alliance (WCA), the world’s largest marine conservation partnership, which champions the protection of marine habitats through community engagement. As an independent organisation, we aspire to work collaboratively with organisations and individuals to create a sightings network.
Our objective is to identify individual dolphins/pods, in order to better understand their behaviour, movement, prey species and breeding sites. This data can then be used to protect our marine environment and ultimately safeguard Sussex marine mammals.
We offer four boat trips between May - September each year.
- The Brighton Sunset Cruise is a one-hour trip leaving from Brighton Marina on a large vessel that takes 50 passengers. We head west from the Marina past Brighton's iconic seafront and piers as the sun sets in front of us. Our wildlife guides are onboard to narrate the experience and tell you all about the marine life you can see in Sussex waters. This is a great trip for families and children are welcome aged 2+.
- The Seven Sisters trip leaves from Newhaven Marina on a 12-seater RHIB. This one-hour trip passes Seaford Bay, stopping to watch seabird colonies and on past Cuckmere Haven with amazing views of the iconic Seven Sisters cliffs. Children are welcome aged 6+.
- The Beachy Head Trip leaves from Newhaven Marina on a 12-seater RHIB. It is a 90-minute guided experience following the route of the Seven Sisters trip but continues to Beachy Head to see the famous lighthouses before heading out to sea to enjoy one of the most beautiful views in Sussex. Children are welcome aged 8+.
- The Rampion Windfarm trip leaves from Newhaven Marina on a 12-seater RHIB. This two-hour trip features an exhilarating ride across 8 miles of the channel to the base of the turbines at Rampion Wind Farm. While floating among the turbines, you will learn about dolphins and other amazing marine life in Sussex, as well as facts about the wind farm, from our wildlife guides. Children welcome aged 10+.
