We are embracing all things free this January, here's our top ideas for low or no-funds fun.
As Janet Jackson and Luther Vandross once sang, “The best things in life are free”, and as the grey of January and the oh-so-distant memory of payday fades away, this is a sentiment most of us can firmly get behind. With this in mind, it’s time to crack out some very cheap and free ideas for activities. We have set the limit at £10 and under but most are free, you just need some time and some weather-appropriate attire.
1) Stunning Seafront walk - Free
Perfect for blowing off the cobwebs and tackling the effects of 2kg of Quality Street (or is that just me?). A walk on the seafront is the perfect January activity, stick to the promenade if the weather is tricky and wrap up warm to enjoy nature at its finest. Take pictures of the brightly coloured beach huts or try the Undercliff walk. If the weather is fair and you have kids in tow a competition to skip stones or see who can find the most unusual pebble is a must.
2) The Rampion Visitor Centre - Free
This free attraction is a great one to discover more about the wind farms just off the coast of Brighton. The Visitor Centre is an exciting and interactive educational experience for children and adults of all ages. We love the VR experience and the interactive games.
3) Park Life – Free
Brighton has a resplendence of green areas and amazing parks to discover, enjoy the peace and wildlife of St Ann’s Wells Garden, or go big and explore Stanmer Park, the largest of Brighton’s parks and the gateway to the South Downs.
4) Window Shopping in the North Laine - Free
The North Laine area offers the funkiest shops around and their window displays reflect this, great for a mooch and to make a to-buy list! With a large number of vintage and second-hand shops if you do happen to have any extra cash to splash it will go further here.
5) Street Art Spotting - Free
With a vibrant street art community Brighton, is one big gallery! So grab a flask and get out to enjoy some spectacular displays, take the kids, and find your favourite artist, if you want to explore further when money is more free-flowing, Enter Gallery runs excellent street art tours.
7) Get your ticket to ride – Single ticket from £1 for a short ride and £7 for a network saver.
Get out and explore the city by bus, with regular services keeping the city connected you can get about for less. Whether you visit friends or take a day trip out to explore the South Downs the bus will give you freedom to explore further.
8) Browse the Open Market - Free
Cram packed with stalls selling goods for less than the high street, head here to discover new tastes and products. With over 50 stalls this is a great way to find more flavours for a fraction of the supermarkets. Look out for their themed days such as their vegan market.
9) Fishing Museum – Free but donations are welcome
Take a journey into Brighton’s fishy past and the rich history of its town and community, with hundreds of photographs, film, and artifacts, including a traditional Sussex fishing boat.
10) Wonder at a Starling Murmuration - Free and rather relaxing!
The winter months see Brighton & Hove welcome back our favourite feathered part-time residents, the starlings. Flocks of Starlings gather on the Brighton Palace Pier and put on a breathtaking show of aerial finesse. There’s even a viewing spot on the Pier dedicated to them.
11) Visit Hove Museum of Creativity - Free Entry
With vibrant displays of fine art and contemporary pieces, this is the perfect way to discover more about Hove and have a free day out to boot! They offer great creative kids clubs too (tickets £10) but these sell out quickly. Don't miss their Mechanical Circus display where you can learn about these nostalgic automata.
12) Turn your Blue Monday pink at Snooper's Paradise, Monday 20th – Friday 24th of January - Free
Snoopers Paradise is hosting a 5-day in-store event starting on ‘Blue’ Monday the 20th of January. The aim is to chase away the January blues with candyfloss ‘Snoopers pink’ treats. The stickers will be hidden in plain sight but due to the chaotic nature of the sprawling vintage shop they may be tricky to spot, so get ready to hunt, who knows what you could win?
January doesn't mean missing out, enjoy these activities and embrace free-dom!
