Brighton has become something of a foodie heaven in recent years. The city offers an array of adventurous, delicious and exciting places to eat and many well worth travelling some distance to try. And if you’re fortunate enough to be a local, you may well already have a favourite on your doorstep.

But like so much else, some areas are better served than others, which is why DaddyLonglegs stands out. Located just off the seafront in the far reaches of KempTown, Arundel Road runs alongside the last beautiful stuccoed white fronts of Arundel Terrace to the east of the city. But it is a lovely 40-minute walk from the station, either along the sea or admiring the beautiful architecture along Marine Parade, in which to work up a thirst or appetite.

It stands out, too, for its name, of course. A reminder of the extraordinary electric railway designed by Magnus Volks that carried passengers along the sea on 23-foot-high legs at the turn of the 19th century. Designed as an extension to the Volks Railway, still operating today, the DaddyLonglegs was only operational for five years and closed in 1902. Visitors to its namesake could enjoy a trip on this, the oldest operating electric railway, as a memorable way to get to – or possibly back from – the pub (*Volk's Railway operates from March to October).

Opened in November 2018, DaddyLonglegs didn’t have much time to get established before covid and lockdowns hit. But established it is now. The first thing you notice beyond the beautiful and well-stocked bar, comfy seating and bright fabrics, is the eclectic mix of diners. No Brighton tribes here but a glorious mix of them all. A true local. From a stylish elderly couple enjoying a night out before leaving on crutches to couples, a large family group (children over 14 are welcome until 9.30pm) and a lively bunch of Miss Kicks, the female over-40 football players rounding off their evening after a session at the nearby Stanley Deason Leisure Centre. All friendly, chatty and delighted to share their joy in having such a great neighbourhood pub - and particularly keen to encourage you back to try the “phenomenal” Sunday lunch.

General manager Anya Wlodarczyk and her team work hard to keep the place fresh with live music on Wednesdays and fish menus on Fridays. There is a garden and a conservatory that can be privately hired. And there is serious knowledge and professionalism behind both the menu of small plates and the impressive list of spirits and wines on offer. Of the selection we sampled, Bang bang shrimp with margarita mayo and avocado, Oyster mushrooms on a harissa chickpea base, a generous portion of Seasonal greens in soy sauce, sesame and ginger, Anchovy pintxos, Roasted celeriac with kimchi and Crab Crumpet, followed by a glorious Chocolate Textures plate, the portions were generous and offer good value at between £6 and £12 a dish. Everything was delicious. The spirit list is extensive and impressive while the wine list is clearly considered with a focus on natural and organic wines and many at reasonable prices.

We enjoyed two types of Margaritas before trying two very different styles of Orange wine. The staff are knowledgeable and happy to advise.

Making it to the top 15 in Best Wine List, Best Pub and Best Sunday Roast in the BRAVO Brighton Restaurant Awards, the word is clearly out. And I for one can’t wait to take another lovely walk along the seafront to try the highly recommended Sunday lunch. I think I’ll need to book.
