We've decided to get to know some of our local business partners a bit better - and today we speak to Katie Mintram of Yellowave...
What’s your role at Yellowave and how long have you been there?
I’m the founder and Director of Yellowave Beach Sports Venue. We built Yellowave and opened its doors for the first time in March 2007.
Why did you want to open Yellowave?
As a beach volleyball player, who spent time in California and Australia, I was passionate about the sport and wanted to bring a slice of the Cali’ beach life back to my home town of Brighton & Hove.
How has your role evolved?
I’ve become much more of the planner than the doer. We have developed an awesome team who implements all the tournaments and run the coaching sessions and cafe, although you can still find me on the washing up at times of need!
What’s the best thing about where you work?
Without a doubt the people. We have such a wonderful community of players and customers from around the world and from different walks of life who have become what Yellowave is all about. They are Yellowave.
What’s your average day like, or is it ever average??
My favourite day is the day that I can squeeze in a game of beach volleyball before I set down to my computer. After that it’s chatting with the staff, planning events, marketing, keeping the venue looking spot on and keeping the place running smoothly and all before I have to pick the kids up from school.
What is the biggest challenge or opportunity currently for Yellowave?
We’re keen to make sure both residents and visitors know we’re open for business and we’re ready to welcome them.
What exciting plans are there for the future?
We’re campaigning to develop a sustainable plan for Madeira Drive with green spaces, public transport and year round access to the Madeira Lift to encourage more visitors and ensure the area is 100% accessible.
What do you like most about Brighton?
I love the open mindedness of it’s people and the privileged position of being sat between the sea and the Downs. As born and bred Brightonians my husband (also a Yellowave Director) and me love being able to take our kids, aged 6 and 7, out into nature as much as possible.
Thank you!
