About
Sound Affects [http://instagram.com/soundaffectsnight] is a night of talks about music and subcultures, how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft. [http://jakhutchcraft.com]
Guest speakers:
Dan Synge - A journalist who has written for the arts and lifestyle pages of The Guardian, Financial Times and Independent. He has also worked for magazines such as GQ, Time Out and Esquire, where he wrote about discovering the ‘West Pole’, chased a puma across Dartmoor and played cricket with gangsters in downtown Los Angeles. His new memoir, Whatever Happened to the Teenage Dream?, is about the journey of a shy but creative schoolboy who gets hooked on music (glam, punk, soul and new wave) then starts his own teenage band. With his group Stranger Than Paradise, he then sets out to become the ‘Next Big Thing’ on the 1980’s pop scene. A tragi-comic, roller coaster ride through the euphoric triumphs and near misses of creativity and music making – or indeed life itself.
Gem the Clown - A performer and music lover who blends drag, neo-burlesque, and clowning. With a glittering grin and plenty of rhinestones, Gem's performances will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions - sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-breaking. She'll be talking to us about expression, clowning, music, LGBTQIA+ club culture, and everything that goes into her persona as Gem The Clown.
