About
Sound Affects [http://instagram.com/soundaffectsnight] is a night of talks about music and subcultures, how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft. [http://jakhutchcraft.com]
Guest speakers:
Dr Joy White - Author who will be discussing her latest book "Like Lockdown Never Happened: Music and Culture During Covid".When everyday life moved online during the Covid-19 lockdowns, music and art took on a renewed importance. Taking a deep dive into the Black popular music and culture that emerged during the pandemic, including Kano's Newham Talks series, Steve McQueen's BBC anthology Small Axe, and the Verzuz DJ Battle series, Like Lockdown Never Happened explores the way that Black joy and creative expression sustained us, shaping our experience of lockdown and helping us counter its isolation and restriction. Joy White is the author of Terraformed: Young Black Lives in the Inner City. Her previous work includes Urban Music and Entrepreneurship: Beats, Rhymes and Young People’s Enterprise, one of the first books to foreground the socio-economic significance of grime music. Joy has also written for The Quietus, The Conversation, Trench, Google Arts + Culture, Red Pepper and Prospect.
