About
Sound Affects is a night of talks about music and subcultures, how sound affects us and how music changes the world. Hearing from writers, musicians, artists, superfans, photographers, filmmakers and everyday music lovers, we dive into personal stories, esoteric bands, fan communities, punk, pop, social change and much more. It's organised and hosted by journalist and documentary filmmaker Jak Hutchcraft.
Guest speakers:
Aniefiok 'Neef' Ekpoudom - Writer and journalist from south London who documents the people, voices and communities of modern Britain. He has written for publications including the Guardian, GQ, Vogue and VICE. His new book, Where We Come From: Rap, Home & Hope in Modern Britain is landmark social history of British rap and grime.
Janey Lee Grace - Singer and best-selling author. In her new book, From WHAM! to WOO A life on the Mic, she shares how she got her break in the music business, the highs and lows of being a backing singer and what it was like touring with bands in the 80’s and 90’s. She writes of being crammed in a minibus with Mari Wilson's band, to living the dream flying first class around the world, playing stadium gigs with George Michael and WHAM!
Asis Patel - A Product Designer who has been on a journey to find his voice. His journey started in 2017 when he moved from place to place with nothing but a North Face backpack. He learned how to speak, sing and write stories to untangle his voice and unblock his lifelong struggle with a stammer. He emerged speaking his truth and sharing his inside world outside. Asis is going to share the story of how we are all made from the same (6) colours and how he's now empowering people to share their true selves, in a bid to make the world a more connected place where you feel cool simply being You.
