New Ceramics Collections at KMA Gallery

About

Welcoming new ceramics collections by three of our esteemed artists, KMA Gallery is celebrating the artform for October. Expressive vessels by Branka Vrhovski-Stanton and Craig Underhill are on display, as well as sculptures by Jessie Mooy.

Ceramic vessels take the place of canvases for artist Branka Vrhovski-Stanton, who has always brought her exploratory abstract brushstrokes to the forms with energy. In this new collection she has started not only incorporating more colour in her decoration, but also taking the vessel into a more sculptural shape. Branka’s free, gestural decoration is now translating into the edges and silhouettes of her works.

Likewise Craig Underhill also uses the vessel as if a painting, but in this case to interpret the topography of the landscape. Inspired by walks in the Cornish environs that surround his home, he turns his many sketches from these walks into his enigmatic forms using various mark-making techniques and a rich palette of glazes. Craig’s extensive skill with building and glazing is on full display with these rich pieces.

Finally, Jessie Mooy’s charming sculptures of women and their animal companions encourage us to consider our symbiotic relationship with nature and the importance of protecting our environment. These delicate, detailed sculptures recall Goddess women of myth and the Renaissance, also accompanied by animals, reminding us of our long and important history with the other beings we share this planet with.

Also on show are The Sea collections by Jonathan Smith, Paul Wearing and Sam Peacock, new paintings by David Hayward and Dawn Stacey, prints and an original painting by Kellie Miller, and etchings by Carolyn Bew, among many more.

These artworks are on view curated across two floors at Kellie Miller Arts, 20 Market Street, Brighton.
