Hilary Bradt - Taking the Risk: My Adventures in Travel and Publishing

About

This is the unique story of one of the true pioneers of modern travel. An industry trailblazer who co-founded Bradt Guides, Hilary Bradt looks back on fifty years of escapades, surprises, mishaps, disasters, and triumphs. Her engaging memoir Taking the Risk weaves together insightful reflections, hilarious anecdotes, and sometimes heart-stopping moments from her serendipitous adventures in both travel and publishing.

The company Hilary co-founded in 1974 is now the largest independently owned travel publisher in the UK and US. Its guidebooks cover 150 overseas destinations, the majority of which are not covered in depth by other travel lists. New titles for 2024, the company's 50th anniversary, include Saudi Arabia, Greenland and two books on regions of Japan (Hokkaido, and Okinawa with the Southwest Islands). Bradt also publishes wildlife guides, travel writing, the award-winning ‘Slow Travel’ series.
of regional UK guides and a range of colour guides to getting out and about in Britain. Two Bradt titles recently won British Guild
of Travel Writers awards: Camping Road Trips UK by Caroline Mills was the 2023 Travel Guidebook of the Year, and My Family
and Other Enemies: Life and travels in Croatia's Hinterland by Mary Novakovich was the Travel Narrative Book of the Year.
