About
June: Bridging the Gap - 3 June 2025
We will begin the workshop by taking a look at some of the key moments in the gardening year at Charleston and exploring where the garden is placed in early Summer. Our Head Gardener Harry Hoblyn will talk you through the key flowering plants on display in the garden at Charleston and explain how the June gap can be bridged through the use of self-seeders and hardy annuals .
He will walk you through the borders in the Walled Garden at Charleston and investigate plant spacing and layout, integration of annuals and biennials, and how to manage bulbs in a complex successional planting matrix.
We will discuss how to grow hardy annuals, dahlias and salvias - and - how to find space for these in your borders by cutting back and thinning out. We will explore how to effectively stake taller plants (such as hollyhocks), take a look at weed control, and discuss the importance of deadheading. Participants will have an opportunity to do a late sowing of Zinnias.
All workshops include an exclusive tour of the modernist home and studio at Charleston, providing a glimpse into its rich artistic history. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day, including a delicious lunch made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Please bring your own secateurs, suitable outdoor clothing and boots for all weathers, and a notebook.
