About

Immerse yourself in the stories, art, and legacy of Charleston in this ten-week course. Through iconic objects, guided tours and engaging discussions with curators, you'll uncover the creative spirit of the Bloomsbury group.

This weekly course begins by exploring how the South Downs and Charleston's architecture inspired Bloomsbury's artistry during the turbulence of the First World War. You'll delve into the relationships and dynamics of the group, illuminated by works like Vanessa Bell's 'The Memoir Club', and trace the influence of European modernism through Roderic O'Conor's 'Flowers'.

Discover Omega Workshops' bold designs, including Fry's furniture, Bell's textiles and Grant's painted screens, as well as the evolution of British studio pottery through Quentin Bell's and Duncan Grant's ceramics. Explore the art of sculpture through Stephen Tomlin's busts, while Maynard Keynes' art collection links Charleston to European masters like Manet and Cézanne.

Personal and hidden histories are woven throughout, from Duncan Grant's private drawings and queer narratives to the infamous 'Great Row' of love and betrayal. The course concludes with a celebration of Angelica Garnett's restoration of Charleston and her role in preserving its legacy.

Sessions take place in the Hay Barn, with guided tours of Charleston in Firle offering exclusive access to our world-class interiors and collection. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day, including a delicious lunch made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
