Did you know the South Downs National Park’s landscapes cover 1,600km2 of stunning views, walking and cycling opportunities, outdoor activities and hidden gems?
Recognised for its natural beauty the South Downs are literally a stone’s throw from Brighton & Hove and are easily accessible by bus, bike or car. If you like to explore on foot then Sussex Walks have a great selection of routes in the area or if you prefer to travel by pedal power then try The Living Coast by Bike.
From gentle rolling hills to picturesque villages, the South Downs National Park is a rich tapestry of stunning coastline, fascinating wildlife, beautiful landscapes, aged woodlands & ancient history. With a huge variety of habitats - chalk grassland, ancient woodland, lowland heath & tiny fragments of chalk heath, the South Downs is also home to the last truly natural place left in the South East - Birling Gap on the Seven Sisters coastline.
So whether you wish to discover the breath-taking white cliffs of the Seven Sisters Country Park, enjoy a tipple in a cosy country pub, walk the South Downs Way or take a picnic to Devil’s Dyke, there are opportunities for everyone - from families and couples to intrepid solo explorers!
South Downs Travel
A great way to explore the South Downs is to purchase a Discovery Bus Ticket, which offers unlimited travel across the South Downs National Park and beyond. Alternatively, hop aboard one of the Breeze up to the Downs buses, a network of three bus services linking Brighton with some of the most popular South Downs destinations close to the city - Stanmer Park, Devil's Dyke & Ditchling Beacon.
Sussex Vineyards
The South Downs National Park also includes several vineyards such as Wiston, Ridgeview and Albourne. The park’s chalky hills are part of the same rock that runs through the Champagne region and today these vineyards are producing English Sparkling Wines to rival their French counterparts. Why not book a Great British Wine Tour to sample some of these delights for yourself? Cheers!
