About
‘Basics’ is bringing some stripped-back soul music and award-winning poetry to Brighton’s cosiest venue, Folklore Rooms. After consecutive sell-out shows and great reviews, ‘basics’ is returning with its final show of the year on the 28th of November.
Stone Jets will be closing the evening out with their mesmerising mixture of bluesy riffs, expressive storytelling and stunningly soulful vocals which are as striking as they are smooth. Originally from South-Africa & France, this unique band has received acclaim from audiences and musicians around the world. They’ve played at Glastonbury, Underneath the Stars, Wilderness and many more festivals as well as touring Europe and supporting acts such as James Morrison, SugaBabes and Hugh Masekela. On the 28th, they’ll bring their incredible set to the intimate crowd in Folklore Rooms.
The poetry headliner for the evening is the Young People’s Laureate in 2021, Cecila Knapp. Originally from Brighton, Cecilia's unique but beautiful style of writing has led to a series of national poetry which include winning the Ruth Rendell award in 2021, being shortlisted for the 2022 Forward prize for best single poem, the Rebbecca Swift Women’s prize and the Outspoken poetry prize. Furthermore, Her debut poetry collection Peach Pig was published by Corsair in 2022 and was the Observer’s poetry book of the month for October. At the third ‘basics’ show, you’ll understand why Cecila’s poetry is held in such high regard.
Supporting these captivating headliners will be two of Brighton’s most exciting up and coming musicians. These will be announced two weeks prior to the show, so keep an eye out.
On Thursday, the 28th of November, Folklore Rooms will open at 7:30pm, with the music starting at 8pm and finishing at 10:30pm. The last two ‘basics’ shows have sold out in advance, so we recommend buying your ticket early.
