Almanac: A Reflection on the Passage of Time at KMA Gallery

About

Our end-of-year exhibition Almanac, a reflection on the passage of time, also marks our 11th anniversary. Artists Alison Coaten, Annabel Munn, Carolyn Bew, Helen Phoenix, Jemma Gowland, Kate Richardson and Phil Jolley were invited to create works to this theme, and each have uniquely and thoughtfully responded, presenting a variety of ruminations on the human experience.

Sculptor Alison Coaten has created two works specifically for Almanac, Fiadh and Harvester, inspired by different almanacs and myths from the natural world. Ceramicist Annabel Munn was inspired to take her work in a new direction, creating a series of tactile, orb-like sculptures reflecting on a year in her life. Fascinated by the absurdity of the human experience, artist Carolyn Bew has introduced a new series of large-scale original drawings that recall the technicolour experience of childhood against the backdrop of the everyday.

With a new series of regal egg tempera paintings, Helen Phoenix continues to highlight the importance of our bird friends, presenting them in the style of traditional icon paintings. Jemma Gowland’s new sculptures draw upon her own family history, using imagery from a collection of fairy tale books illustrated by a relative at the turn of the 20th century.

Painter Kate Richardson, inspired by the wild coastlines of the West Country, has produced a series of dreamlike and mystical paintings that transport you to their fantastical locations. Finally, ceramicist Phil Jolley has developed his relic-like works, incorporating text and numerology created through molds of historic architectural details.

Also on show are new paintings by David Hayward and Dawn Stacey, prints and an original painting by Kellie Miller, sculptures by Jackie Summerfield and Jessie Mooy, and ceramics by Paul Wearing, among many more.

These artworks are on view curated across two floors at Kellie Miller Arts, 20 Market Street, Brighton.
